Typhoon in Japan heightens nuclear plant concerns

typhoon Japan Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Tokyo Electric Power storage tanks radioactive water leaks Pacific Ocean Nuclear Regulation Authority

A typhoon with winds topping 100 miles-per-hour hit mainland Japan Sept. 16, causing flooding at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, according to Salon.com.

Workers reportedly are pumping rainwater to prevent it from mixing with storage tanks containing radioactive water, the article said. The tanks have been the source of multiple leaks of up to 400 gallons of contaminated water into the ocean. While plant operator Tokyo Electric Power said in the article it believes the rainwater that is being released into the Pacific Ocean is untainted, the country’s Nuclear Regulation Authority is re-measuring the radioactivity of the rainwater and will decide if the release qualifies as a “nuclear event,” the article said.
