NRC monitoring LaSalle nuclear plant after lightning strike

LaSalle nuclear power plant

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced it is monitoring the LaSalle nuclear power plant, in Marseilles, Ill., after a lightning strike knocked out offsite power to both reactors at the facility. The NRC declared an “Unusual Event” at around 3 pm Wednesday, the NRC’s lowest level emergency classification.

After offsite power to the two Mark II boiling water reactors was lost, the plant went into automatic shutdown, control rods were inserted and the facility’s diesel generators began supplying power to plant equipment.
