In an appearance on "The Colbert Report" this week, Michael Shellenberger, president of the energy and environmental policy advocacy group The Breakthrough Institute, praised nuclear power as an essential part of the clean energy mix the world will need to stem climate change.
“We spent 20 years on global warming trying to make fossil fuels more expensive, and that’s not worked,” he said, adding that it is time to focus on “making clean energy cheap.”
“We ended up scaling up in the 50s and 60s the technology that we used to power nuclear submarines and it was the wrong technology. There’s much better technologies that are in the works,” Shellenberger said, like liquid metal and thorium reactors, for instance.
