Ivanpah solar energy unit more than 90% complete

BrightSource Energy said Unit 1 at the 370 MW Ivanpah solar energy project reached first flux on Feb. 25, meaning a significant amount of sunlight was reflected off the solar field mirrors.

More than 1,000 heliostats focused on to the Unit 1 solar receiver, heating the water inside the boiler to just below the point of steam generation.  Construction at Unit 1 is more than 90 percent complete, while Unit 2 is more than 80 percent finished. Unit 3 is more than 70 percent complete, the company said.

The plant is expected to enter commercial operations in 2013. Along with BrightSource, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and NRG Solar LLC are also an equity investor in the project, while Bechtel is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor and is providing start up services.
