Chu to head back to Stanford after leaving DOE

Dr Steven Chu - US energy secretary

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu will return to Stanford University as a faculty member this spring after he vacates his administration post, The Stanford Daily reports.

Before his appointment to head up the Department of Energy, Chu worked as a professor of physics and applied physics at Stanford from 1987 to 2008. At Stanford, according to the report, Chu will focus on energy efficiency and energy policy issues, as well as launching an advanced bio-imaging initiative.

“The highest point in my career was when I became a professor in [such] a great institution,” Chu is quoted as saying by the Stanford paper.

The exact date of Chu’s eminent departure from the DOE is still unknown but is expected to come very soon. Rampant speculation about his replacement has largely settled on MIT’s Ernest Moniz, a nuclear physicist like Chu.
