Reactor 2 at PPL’s (NYSE: PPL) Susquehanna nuclear plant near Berwick, Pa. was forced to shutdown Dec. 19 due to low coolant water levels around the reactor, according to a report from the NRC. The automatic shutdown occurred while the A reactor feed pump was transitioning from discharge pressure mode to flow control mode during restarting. All safety systems operated as expected and the NRC is currently investigating the cause of the shutdown.

Wednesday’s shutdown occurred just days after Unit 2 was forced into a shutdown on Sunday during a routine test of a valve on the main turbine system. The reactor had additional problems earlier in the year, including a computer malfunction and hydraulic oil leak in November and a water leak that was found in Unit 1 in June.
