Natural gas-fired power plant in North Carolina begins operations

Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) that acquires, builds, manages and owns generation assets that have been constructed for the wholesale market, on Dec. 4 began commercial operation of Plant Cleveland, a 720 MW natural gas-fired power plant in Cleveland County, N.C.

The plant uses four Siemens (NYSE: SI) F Class gas turbine units. The plant will provide electricity output to the North Carolina Electric Membership Corp. and the North Carolina Municipal Power Agency No. 1 under long-term power purchase agreements.

Southern Power acquired the 925 MW natural gas-fired Plant Rowan in 2006 and announced in October along with Turner Renewable Energy Inc. the acquisition of the 2.5 MW Granville Solar Facility.
