Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) completed an agreement with United Technologies Corp. in which MHI will acquire Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (PWPS), the small- and medium-size gas turbine business unit of Pratt & Whitney. The official announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday at POWER-GEN International 2012.

PWPS primarily engages in the engineering, assembly and sales of aeroderivative gas turbines and also provides gas turbine services and engineering, procurement and construction services of related power generation systems.

The aeroderivative gas turbines are known for their compact design and rapid start-up time. The main products are the 30 MW class machines, but the company is currently developing new 60 MW class models.

PWPS’ U.S. operations will be aligned with Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas Inc. based in Lake Mary, Fla.

“The operation itself will remain unchanged,” said MPSA President Koji Hasegawa. “The PWPS business offers tremendous synergy with our existing U.S. operations. It significantly diversifies our equipment offering and compliments the scope of our service business.”

MHI said in a statement that the acquisition will help the company to provide a far wider range of generation solutions from a much broader portfolio. Combining MHI’s large-capacity, high efficiency turbines with PWPS’ aeroderivative gas turbines will provide a kind of one-stop basis for customers.
Shipments from the new Savannah Machinery Works gas turbine manufacturing and service facility in Georgia will not be impacted by the transaction in the near term, Hasegawa said. 

Going forward, MHI said it plans to further strengthen its marketing activities for gas turbines.
