EPRI, IAEA to jointly research nuclear power plant development

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced a three-year collaboration to promote public benefit research into nuclear power plant development, operation, decommissioning, and waste disposal. The collaboration also will enable technical engagement on issues regarding nuclear plant development in countries starting commercial nuclear power programs.

Some of the technical engagement areas include post-Fukushima risk and safety evaluation, capacity building for new owners and expanding countries, nuclear power plant aging and materials degradation, and waste characterization and disposal technologies.

As part of the collaboration, the two groups will share information on commercial nuclear energy, organization of joint workshops and training seminars, and publication of joint reports and guidelines.

“Continued interest in and growth of commercial nuclear power around the world highlights the importance of coordinated global engagement on issues related to safe, reliable nuclear plant operation and management,” said Neil Wilmshurst, EPRI vice president and chief nuclear officer. “Our collaboration with IAEA will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and research results to a broader set of stakeholders, supporting operational and safety improvements across the global nuclear industry, particularly in countries new to nuclear power.”
