Source of leak found at nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania

PPL Corp. (NYSE: PPL) said it has found the source of a leak inside the 1,260 MW Unit 1 containment structure at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. The unit was shut down on June 19.

Workers said the leak was from a welded joint on the reactor recirculation piping where a 4-inch blank-flanged pipe for chemical decontamination connects to a 28-inch pipe. The location was within the recirculation loop isolation valves on the suction side of the recirculation pump.

Workers would not say when the unit would return to service. Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.
