The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is launching a special inspection at Progress Energy’s (NYSE: PGN) Harris nuclear power plant in North Carolina after two main steam isolation valves failed in April.
The plant had shut down and was in the process of cooling for refueling on April 21 when two main steam isolation valves failed to close. One of the valves was closed a little more than 30 minutes later, while the other valve took three hours to close.
The on-site inspection will take several days, and a report documenting the results should be issued within 45 days of completion of the inspection.
