Large-scale solar energy project in California breaks ground

MidAmerican Solar, a unit of MidAmerican Renewables, and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR) broke ground May 3 on the 550 MW Topaz solar photovoltaic (PV) project in California.

Topaz will be owned by MidAmerican and built, operated and maintained by First Solar. Construction began in November 2011 and is expected to be completed by early 2015. The project will use First Solar’s advanced thin-film PV modules.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (NYSE: PCG) signed a 25-year power purchase agreement to buy the output from the plant.
