IEP signs agreement for waste-to-energy facility in Haiti

May 8, 2012

Pittsburgh-based International Electric Power LLC (IEP) signed an agreement with the government of Haiti to form a public-private venture in a power generating facility that will remove waste from the streets of Port au Prince and provide 30 MW of reliable, green, baseload electric power fueled by municipal solid waste. The planned integrated waste management and power facility will be about 18 km (11.2 miles) north of Port au Prince.

Municipal waste will be collected by a waste collection company that will serve the seven municipalities of greater Port au Prince and work in conjunction with the government's Metropolitan Waste Collection Service and private collectors.

Project Phoenix is expected to bring about the creation of nearly 10,000 jobs in Haiti, including training and equal opportunity hiring requirements. The project requires the investment of $250 million.
