A report on the future of global manufacturing estimates that 10 million manufacturing jobs worldwide cannot currently be filled due to a growing skills gap. The report, “The Future of Manufacturing: Opportunities to Drive Economic Growth,” was released by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited.

This shortage is existent despite the high unemployment rate in many developed economies where companies are struggling to fill manufacturing jobs, such as highly‐trained workers and engineers.

The report also examined the role energy will play in the future of manufacturing, revealing that affordable clean energy strategies and effective energy policies will be a top priority for manufacturers and policymakers. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects world energy consumption will more than double from a 1990 baseline, and the report explores new energy‐efficient ways of manufacturing that will need to be explored as a result of increased energy consumption.
