Progress to repower oil- and natural gas-fired power plant

Apr 2, 2012

Progress Energy Florida, a unit of Progress Energy (NYSE: PGN), is planning to convert the more than 1,000 MW Anclote Power Plant to 100 percent natural gas. The plant currently uses oil and natural gas.

The fuel switch will help the company comply with federal emission standards, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) rule.

The conversion is expected to eliminate 98 percent of the metals and 99 percent of the sulfur dioxide (SO2) that the current units emit, while particulate emissions will be reduced by more than 90 percent. The project is expected to cost $79 million and will be completed in two phases in mid- and late 2013.

In 2009, Progress completed an $800 million repowering project at the Bartow Power Plant in Florida that switched the fuel generation from oil to natural gas.
