Exelon returns two nuclear power plants to service

Exelon (NYSE: EXC) on April 23 said two nuclear power units have been returned to service.

Unit 1 at the two-unit, 2,345 MW Limerick Generating Station 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia returned to full power following repairs to an electrical system on the non-nuclear side of the plant. Limerick Unit 1 was manually taken offline by operators on April 19 when an electrical malfunction caused the plant’s generator cooling pump to shut down. There was no risk to the public and no injuries associated with the event.

Exelon also said operators returned Quad Cities Generating Station Unit 2 in Cordova, Ill., to full power. Quad Cities Generation Station houses two-units that generate about 1,737 MW.

Exelon Nuclear employees and technical experts performed more than 14,000 work activities, including equipment upgrades, safety inspections and tests, and numerous plant improvements while the unit was offline.

The Unit 2 refueling outage began March 19.
