Coal-fired power plant scrubber reduces emissions in six months

Public Service of New Hampshire said in a report that the installation of a wet flue gas desulfurization (wet FGD), or scrubber, at the Merrimack coal-fired power plant has reduced mercury and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by up to 98 percent.

The report filed with the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission shows that the Clean Air Project reduced mercury well above the 80 percent requirement set by the state Legislature and SO2 above the 90 percent reduction goal.

The state Legislature mandated the FGD system in 2006, which led to a mercury emissions reduction requirement of more than 80 percent from the flue gases of the utility’s coal plants. The Clean Air Project was declared in-service on September 28, 2011.

The remaining construction work associated with the Clean Air Project is expected to be completed in June. The final cost of the project is projected to be $422 million, a reduction of $35 million compared to the initial project budget of $457 million.
