Coal-fired power plant owner files for bankruptcy

Rocky Mountain Power LLC, which owns the Hardin coal-fired power plant in Montana, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware on April 23.

The filing names Colorado-based Rocky Mountain Power as the debtor along with Bicent Holdings LLC and its affiliates. The filing estimates assets at $100 million to $500 million and liabilities at $500 million to $1 billion, according to the Billings (Mont.) Gazette.

According to the article, the filing said that Bicent owes the Montana Department of Revenue $820,475, the state Department of Environmental Quality has a claim for $52,958 and the city of Hardin claims it is owed $79,300. NorthWestern Energy has a claim for $109,567 and Warren Transport Inc. is owed $79,306.

The 116 MW Hardin plant began operating in 2006. It was built by MDU Resources Group, and Colorado Energy Management LLC operates it. There is no word on what will happen with the plant.
