Commission to discuss coal-fired power plant project in Mississippi

The Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC) will meet on March 30, 2012, to discuss and possibly take action on Mississippi Power Co.’s request for a temporary certificate to continue work on the 582 MW Kemper County integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) project.

On March 15, the Mississippi Supreme Court reversed an approval for the $2.8 billion coal gasification project. The Court said the Mississippi PSC’s May 2010 approval failed to satisfy the law that the plant would benefit the utility’s customers and sent the case back to the PSC.

Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO), originally planned to complete the Kemper project by 2014.
