The nuclear power industry in the U.S. regained some momentum on Feb. 9, 2012, when the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted 4-1 to approve the combined construction and operating license for Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4. This vote marked the approval of the first construction license for new nuclear in the U.S. in over 30 years.
On Feb. 15, 2012, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu, along with Thomas A. Fanning, Southern Co. Chairman, president and CEO and Paul Bowers, Georgia Power president and CEO, will tour the construction sites of both Units 3 and 4.
Dr. Chu is expected to deliver comments from the site in regards to the Obama Administration’s support for nuclear energy in the U.S.
We will cover the event and have Chu’s statements on the Power Engineering site as they become available.
