A plan proposed to develop Quebec’s northern region could close as much as 30 percent of the territory from hydroelectric development.

News reports said that Quebec’s Plan Nord, which was supposed to increase the province’s renewable energy output with hydroelectric and wind developments, may actually be scaled back by the government due to pressure from environmental groups and native Inuit tribes.

The 25-year, C$80 billion ($83.8 billion) plan called for 2,000 MW of hydroelectric power from about 50 potential sites, an additional 1,500 MW of wind projects, and also included measures for mining, forestry, tourism and wildlife development. It was first announced in May 2011.
