Westinghouse Electric Co. has received five orders for 37 of the company’s shield reactor coolant pump (RCP) passive thermal shutdown seal to enhance the safety of U.S. nuclear power plants.
To date, the seal has been installed in units 1 and 2 at the Joseph M. Farley nuclear power plant in Alabama, owned by Southern Co (NYSE: SO).
The shutdown seal is designed to protect a nuclear plant’s reactor core by preventing loss of reactor coolant system water inventory should an event occur that causes a loss of all reactor coolant pump seal cooling. With the seal installed, operators do not need to implement an immediate cooldown to address RCP seal leakage at the onset of a station blackout.
