Exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) could increase U.S. consumer prices for the fuel by 36 to 54 percent by 2018, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) study, “Effect of Increased Natural Gas Exports on Domestic Energy Markets.”  Natural gas exports would also increase electricity costs between 2 and 9 percent, the study says.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy requested EIA to conduct the study in August of 2011. The report was released on Jan. 19, 2012.
