Cobb Electric Membership Corp.’s board of directors voted Jan. 24 to stop financing its share in building the 850 MW coal-fired Plant Washington in Georgia.

Cobb EMC is part of a consortium named Power4Georgians, and has already put in $13.5 million toward the plans, according to The Marietta Daily Journal. Its 2012 contribution reportedly was to be another $1.7 million. The project is expected to cost $2.1 billion to build.

Cobb EMC reportedly began seeking bids for its future power supplies just before Christmas 2011.

The plant received its air permit in November 2011 and is expected to begin commercial operation in 2017 or 2018.
