BP Wind Energy and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power will jointly develop the Mehoopany Wind Farm in Pennsylvania and the Flat Ridge 2 Wind Farm in Kansas with a combined $1 billion investment.

The Mehoopany Wind Farm is expected to generate up to 141 MW of electricity. Old Dominion Electric Co-Op and Southern Maryland Electric Co-Op Inc. are both buying the output from the project under power purchase agreements. Construction on the site began in November 2011 and it will use 88 GE (NYSE: GE) 1.6 MW turbines. Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. is performing the construction work.

The planned 419 MW Flat Ridge 2 Wind farm will use 262 GE turbines each with a rated capacity of 1.6 MW. Associated Electric Co-Op Inc and Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), are buying the output from the plant. Blattner Energy will construct the plant.

Both wind farms are expected to be in commercial operation by the end of 2012.
