The Ontario government said on Dec. 1 that it is permanently shutting down two more coal-fired units at the Ontario Power Generation-owned 2,760 MW Nanticoke Generating Station.
In September 2009, OPG announced it was shutting down two of the eight generating units at the Nanticoke plant by 2010.
As of December 31, Ontario will have shut down 10 of 19 coal units and cut the use of coal by nearly 90 percent since 2003. The shut downs are part of a provincial plan to close down all coal-fired generation in Ontario by the end of 2014.
