The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) told Luminant, a unit of Energy Future Holdings Corp., that the company could shut down two coal-fired power plants without jeopardizing the stability of the state’s electrical grid.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Luminant will idle units 1 and 2 at the Monticello plant. Luminant said it needs to shut them down in order to comply with regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), specifically the Cross State Air Pollution Rule. The closures would reportedly cut Luminant’s generating capacity by 8 percent.
