Power4Georgians, a consortium of ten electric co-ops in Georgia, received an air permit from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for the planned $2.1 billion, 850 MW Plant Washington coal-fired power plant.
In December 2010, a state administrative law judge ruled that the original air permit's emissions limits for particulate matter and carbon monoxide did not include the maximum achievable control technology, and that more analysis was needed to determine what the proper emissions limits should be.
Power4Georgians in June reached a settlement agreement with environmental groups challenging the project's water permit, which was finalized in August.
The plant is expected to begin commercial operation in 2017 or 2018.
Six Georgia co-ops are equity participants in the Power4Georgians project: Cobb Electric Membership Corp., Central Georgia EMC, Pataula EMC, Snapping Shoals EMD, Upson EMC, and Washington EMC; Cobb EMC owns Pataula EMC.
