Google data center wind farm starts operations

The 100.8 MW Minco II wind farm, which will help power Google’s (NYSE: GOOG) data center near Pryor, Okla., is now operational, The Oklahoman reports. The 130,000-square-foot data center, which opened in September, powers a variety of Google’s services.

Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), the companies announced in April.

The start-up of Minco II comes a few days after Google announced the abandonment of its “Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal” project. Google announced through its blog on Nov. 22 that “other institutions are better positioned than Google to take this research to the next level.” Google intends to continue its clean energy efforts through Google campus sustainability projects and implementing renewable energy at its data centers, the blog said.
