The 103 MW NRG Dover combined heat and power plant in Delaware will convert to natural gas through a state-assisted, $26.5 million project.

News reports said that plant owner NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) will replace the 18 MW coal-fired unit with an upgraded system of turbines that will burn natural gas and use steam recovery and emission control systems. The plant also has an 88 MW combustion turbine.

The project is expected to begin in spring 2012 and be completed in 2013.

The plant sells power on the PJM Interconnection and also provides industrial steam to the adjacent Kraft Foods plant and Procter & Gamble’s Wipes Plant.
