Capital Power Corp. said it expects the 495 MW Unit 3 at Genesee coal-fired power plant in Calgary to be offline for five weeks due to unplanned maintenance needs.

The plant, jointly owned by Capital Power and TransAlta Corp., experienced an unplanned outage that resulted in damage to the turbine and generator bearings. The outage is estimated to last until mid-December 2011.

Capital Power said because of the plant shutdown, its fourth quarter production from its Alberta coal fleet is expected to be reduced by 180 GWh. Additional generation from the company’s 243 MW Clover Bar Energy Centre peaking plant is expected to materially offset the lost production.
