Natural gas-fired units to be mothballed in Texas

NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG) wants to mothball 473 MW of natural gas-fired generation at the S.R. Bertron plant near Texas by Jan. 1, effectively shutting it down.

Reuters reports that NRG said it wants to mothball two, 230 MW units and one 13 MW quick start unit at the plant. Two other units at the plant were already mothballed, but one of those units was returned to service under a short “must-run” contract with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) that expires in November.

ERCOT must first determine if the units are needed for grid reliability before they can shut down. NRG idled a 400 MW gas-fired unit at the Greens Bayou power plant with ERCOT's approval Oct. 1.

That brings the total to 1,600 MW of generating capacity in Texas that owners want to reportedly shut down early next year in order to comply with new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

NRG said in the article that it wants to maintain the option of bringing the plants back into service as needed or when economical.
