Electric power cooperative files for bankruptcy

Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Co-op filed for bankruptcy Oct. 21.

The cooperative said in news reports that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection citing an “acute cash-flow crisis.” SME includes five rural electric co-ops in Montana and the city of Great Falls.

SME in 2011 completed an 80 MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle unit that was built on the same site as the Highwood coal-fired power plant in Montana.
