The University of Michigan plans to spend $6.75 million to update its 46.5 MW combined heat and power Central Power Plant on campus.

News reports said that the upgrade will include work on the plant’s electrical control systems. The plant provides steam for the heating, cooling and electricity to several buildings in the Central and Medical campuses. Stanley Consultants was reportedly chosen to design the upgrades.

The pledge is part of a $14 million initiative, and funding for the upgrades will reportedly be provided from an already existing utility resources fund.

Construction on the project is scheduled to finish in fall of 2014.
