Nuclear power plant shuts during California blackout

Sep 9, 2011

The 2,150 MWe San Onofre nuclear power plant owned by Southern California Edison in California remained shut down September 9 after a transmission system outage in Arizona led to a loss of electricity to the plant.

The power outage began September 8 when an Arizona Public Service employee carried out a procedure at a substation in Arizona that caused a loss of power on a line that carries electricity to Southern California. The San Onofre nuclear plant went offline shortly after and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. (SDG&E) did not have adequate resources to maintain power across the region, causing additional blackouts across parts of Arizona and Mexico.

SDG&E reported it has restored power to many of its customers but San Onofre remains offline until power is restored there.

The 4,005 MWe Palo Verde nuclear power plant in Arizona is operating at full power, according to the NRC Web site.
