Finalists named for Power Engineering's Projects of the Year awards

The editors of Power Engineering magazine and PennWell Corp. have announced nine finalists for the annual Projects of the Year Awards program.

The finalists were selected from three major categories: Best Coal-fired Project, Best Gas-fired Project and Best Renewable/Sustainable Project.

The Best Nuclear Project category will be replaced this year by a special tribute to the employees of Tokyo Electric Power Co. for their work in trying to stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after the March earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan.

The 2011 Best Coal-fired Project finalists are Ameren Corp.’s emissions control project at the Coffeen Plant in Illinois; the Hudson Unit 2 Back End Technology project, owned by PSEG Fossil LLC in New Jersey; and Alabama Power’s Plant Miller flue gas desulfurization project in Alabama.

Finalists for the Best Gas-fired Project are Empire Generating Co. LLC’s Empire Generating Project in New York; the Dave Gates Generating Station at Mill Creek in Montana, owned by NorthWestern Energy; and the GTX – Cogeneration Project owned by Dubai Aluminum Co. Limited in the United Arab Emirates.

The three finalists for the renewable/sustainable category are Florida Power & Light’s Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Florida; the City of Coachella Water Reclamation Plant owned by Solar Power Partners in California; and Sarnia Solar Project, owned by Enbridge Inc. in Sarnia, Ontario.

“The world’s appetite for energy continues to grow,” said Richard G. Baker, senior vice president of PennWell’s Power Generation Group. “Companies like those represented by this year’s project finalists are instrumental in meeting the growing demand. Power Engineering magazine is once again pleased to be able to recognize some of the exceptional power generation projects that were completed in the past year.”

The winners of the Projects of the Year Awards will be announced during a gala awards banquet on Monday, Dec. 12, at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel Ballroom C in Las Vegas, Nev. as part of the POWER-GEN International Conference and Exhibition and the co-located NUCLEAR POWER International Conference and Exhibition.

Power Engineering magazine is the voice of the power generation industry. More than 70,000 power generation professionals read Power Engineering magazine for expert coverage of the industry’s important news and emerging trends. The magazine, POWER-GEN International and NUCLEAR POWER International are all owned by PennWell Corp., a worldwide media company based in Tulsa, Okla.
