The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff said there are no safety aspects that would preclude issuing the combined licenses for units 2 and 3 at the Virgil C. Summer nuclear power plant in South Carolina.
South Carolina Electric & Gas, a unit of Scana Corp. (NYSE: SCG) and the owner of the Summer plant, will use two, 1,100 MW Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear plants for the units. The commission has yet to complete the certification process for the design before it can hold a mandatory hearing decision on the license. The final safety evaluation report (FSER) and the final environmental impact statement (FEIS) will be available to the full commission for the mandatory hearing phase of the licensing process.
SCE&G submitted the application for the COL in March 2008. The new reactors will be built adjacent to the plant’s existing 966 MW reactor.
