ABB is designing and building an arc-resistant, medium voltage dry-type transformer for a BC Hydro hydropower plant, ABB announced at HydroVision International 2011 in Sacramento.
ABB will supply the three transformers as part of a replacement and upgrade to new equipment for the 462 MW capacity Bridge River hydroelectric project's static excitation system. The project is located in the Bridge River valley in British Columbia. ABB is also providing excitation systems to the hydro project.
The transformers compliment the company's SafeGear medium voltage arc flash switchgear designed to protect nearby utility workers if an arc flash event were to occur in one of the transformer enclosures.
The transformers are expected to be commissioned in spring 2012.
