Qatar commissions Ras Qartas 2730 MW power and water plant

06/01/2011
Qatar General Electricity and Water Company (Kahramaa) has commissioned the Ras Qartas power and water plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, which once fully operational will produce 2730 MW and 63m gallons of desalinated water, having cost in the region of $4bn to build.

The development is subject to a 25-year contract with Qatar General Electricity and Water Company (Kahramaa), the terms of which will see Ras Qartas supplying all of its production capacity to the offtaker, which will then be used for the local network or as part of the GCC Interconnection Grid, reports Utilities ME.

60 per cent of the plant is Qatari-owned, divided between Kahramaa (45 per cent) and Qatar Petroleum (15 per cent), and there are currently no plans to acquire non-Qatari shares, although Faisal Obeid Al Siddiqi, Vice Chairman of the Ras Qartas Energy Plant, has not ruled it out as a future prospect.
