AP1000 design concerns softened in UK

The United Kingdom’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) said that the regulatory issue connected to the design of Westinghouse’s AP1000 nuclear reactor has been lifted.

The ONR is assessing the AP1000 reactor as part of the UK Generic Design Assessment process. The announcement brings the AP1000 one step closer to design acceptance in the UK.

Westinghouse said Revision 19 sent to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) earlier in June should address all concerns, and NRC could confirm final approval for the AP1000 design later in 2011.
