
CH2M Hill has been awarded a contract for the expansion of the Los Esteros Critical Energy Facility, in San Jose, Calif., by its owner, Los Esteros Critical Energy Facility LLC, an affiliate of Calpine Corp.
The expansion will convert the existing 188 MW natural gas-fired, simple-cycle electric generation peaking facility to combined-cycle operation. The plant currently uses 4 GE LM6000 combustion turbines. A steam turbine-generator, four heat recovery steam generators and auxiliary plant equipment will be added. Los Esteros hired CH2M Hill to engineer, procure and construct the facility expansion. Los Esteros is responsible for overall project development, procurement of major equipment (HRSGs, steam turbine generator,and generator step-up transformer, condenser and cooling tower) and for providing design basis, performance requirements and scope.
CH2M Hill is responsible for engineering, balance of plant equipment and material procurement, all in-plant construction, testing, cleaning and commissioning throughout mechanical completion and performance testing to the commercial operation date.
CH2M Hill’s basic scope of work includes the site and sub-grade preparation, foundations and all other civil work including final landscaping, installation of all equipment, all electrical work, mechanical work, structural steel, piping including pipe racks, all underground utilities, alteration of stacks, tanks, buildings, painting, inspection and testing, startup, commissioning and final performance testing.
