Since the nuclear crisis in Japan, resulting from the earthquake and tsunami that damaged the Fukushima complex, Brazil has come under pressure from environmentalist groups to shutdown its two nuclear plants.
Followed this renewed pressure, Brazilian authorities have reiterated they have safety procedures in place to meet any potential crisis.
However, Jose Manuel Diaz Franciso, in charge of security for estate-owned Electronuclear, told Agence France Presse that safety procedures have been reinforced recently.
“We have put procedures in place [to increase security] but [the accident] in Fukushima has accelerated them,” Diaz Franciso told the news agency.
