Ameresco Inc. and City of Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) completed a 4.3 MW biogas energy recovery facility April 19. The new wastewater biogas plant, which will generate electricity and thermal load to power DWU’s facilities, is expected to save the city roughly $1.5 million annually and offset approximately 60 percent of the electricity that the DWU currently pulls from the grid.
DWU provides water and wastewater services to about 2.5 million people in Dallas and 27 nearby communities. Currently, the DWU facility can treat up to 110 million gallons of wastewater per day. Traditionally, excess gas at a wastewater facility is burned off by flares. Ameresco can now treat and deliver up to 1,200 standard cubic feet per minute of biogas to power the plant. The city plans to incorporate future production increases.
Ameresco designed, built and will operate the plant.
