The contribution of thermal generation, derived from diesel, coal and natural gas, is set to rise this year, according to estimates published by Noticias Financieras.
According to the report, thermoelectricity generation could increase to 60 per cent of the total energy input into the country's Central Interconnected System (SIC), which supplies 94 per cent of the country’s electricity.
This increase is likely if the drought, which has been hardest since records began - persist in the central southern area of the South American country, experts have warned.
