Explosion at gas-fired plant kills 5, injures 12

8 February 2010-- Five workers were killed and 12 injured after an explosion at a 620 MW natural gas-fired plant under construction in Connecticut on Feb. 7. Officials are still investigating what caused the accident but some reports say workers may have been purging a gas line when the explosion occurred.

The plant was being built by Kleen Energy Systems. The explosion happened around 11:30 a.m. EST and was felt up to 20 miles away.

Connecticut Light & Power signed a 15-year power purchase agreement to purchase power from the plant. Siemens Power Generation provided the turbines and O&G Industries was the contractor for the project.
