4 November 2009 - Atel Energia, the Spanish subsidiary of Swiss energy company Alpiq Group, has purchased Hispaelec, EDF's sales company in Spain, as part of its progressive expansion in Europe.

Atel Energía has been pushing electricity sales in Spain. After the acquisition it will be the biggest energy provider in Spain outside of the traditional Spanish electricity companies.

Atel Energía and Hispaelec sold more than three TWh of electricity last year and together manage more than 800 customers.

Atel Energía's expansion is part of a larger focus on growth in Europe by Swiss parent company Alpiq Group.
