17 November 2009-- American Electric Power (AEP) will buy steam turbines from Alstom Power for its DC Cook 1 nuclear power plant in Michigan and its Conesville 4 coal-fired generating unit in Ohio valued at $100 million.
At the Cook nuclear power plant, Alstom will provide three replacement low-pressure nuclear steam turbine rotors for unit 1. At the Conesville 4 unit, Alstom will provide a high-pressure rotor and parts and install the turbine. The retrofit will help offset power requirements of a new sulfur dioxide (SO2) scrubber installed at the site.
AEP and Alstom also commissioned October 30 a 20 MW installation of Alstom's chilled ammonia process for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture at AEP's 1,300 MW Mountaineer power plant in West Virginia. Mountaineer is one of the first integrated CO2 capture and storage projects at a coal-fired power plant. The technology will remove an estimated 90 percent of CO2 emissions from the flue gas stream.
