Progress Energy's 950 MW gas-fired plant is a go

1 October 2009-- Progress Energy has gotten the green light from North Carolina state regulators to build a 950 MW natural gas-fired plant that will replace a coal-fired plant set to retire in 2013.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission issued the order approving the $900 million plant, or $950 per kW, that will be built near the retiring 370 MW Lee Plant. Construction is expected to start in 2011.

The state General Assembly approved legislation in July to begin the technology switch and established a streamlined certification process so Progress Energy could comply with the state's Clean Smokestacks Act by 2013.
