15 April 2009 — Sempra Generation, a unit of Sempra Energy, plans to construct a new 48 MW expansion of its existing photovoltaic (PV) generation facility in Nevada.
Construction will start after Sempra contracts to sell the facility's power output. The project could be operational by late 2010. Sempra selected Arizona-based First Solar to be the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
Upon completion, the project, called Copper Mountain Solar, will be capable of generating 48 MW. With the existing 167,000 PV panels at the adjacent 10 MW facility, completed late last year, the facilities will use nearly 1 million PV panels.
