Japan to put CO2 underground storage technology into practice by 2020

07/29/2008

29 July 2008 - Japan adopted an action plan Tuesday aiming to put underground storage technology for carbon dioxide into practice by 2020 to help curb global warming.

The so-called "carbon dioxide capture and storage" technology is to collect CO2 emitted from thermal power plants and other facilities and contain it underground to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.

Japan will begin a large-scale experiment of the technology from the next fiscal year, aiming to reduce CO2 collection costs from the current some 4200 yen ($39) per ton to less than 2000 yen per ton in the in line with the action plan endorsed at a Cabinet meeting.
